Babul SupriyoBhopal: Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Babul Supriyo has on Saturday said that the Uttar Pradesh government cannot shirk its responsibility in recent violence in Mathura as maintaining of law and order comes under the purview of the state regime. The incident in Mathura is a serious one and the state government is solely responsible for the deaths of 24 people, including a superintendent of police, in the violence, Supriyo told media here after returning from Mukundpur White Tiger Safari in Satna District in the state.

He said that Mathura is a sacred land and unfortunately, the violence erupted over there due to encroachment of government land. It seems the administration could not assess the situation properly and hence, such a major incident occurred. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh sought report from the state government about the incident and hopefully, necessary action would be initiated on the basis of the report, the Minister said.

Regarding recent assembly elections in West Bengal in which Trinamool Congress returned to power with thumping majority, The Bollywood singer-turned-politician said that the results did not reflect the BJP’s growing influence in that state.

Supriyo claimed that the BJP’s mass base had increased in the state despite the fact that the party received 17 per cent of vote during the last Lok Sabha polls in 2014 whereas the percentage came down to 10.7 in the assembly elections.
