Bhopal: Chief Minister Kamal Nath has appealed the citizens to make their friends and relatives aware about the importance of organ donation on the occasion of ‘World Organ Donation Day’. He said that it is possible to save life through organ donation. Kamal Nath has urged people to register themselves for organ donation.

In an appeal issued to the public, Nath has said that the decision of organ donation can give life and happiness not only to one person but to many families. He said that it is necessary to become aware of organ donation and come forward to save the lives of needy people. Nath told that the state government has implemented ‘Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994’ to promote organ donation. A State level Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization (SOTTO) has been constituted to promote organ donation before and after death.

He said that arrangements are being made to provide organ transplant facilities in the hospitals of government medical colleges at Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Rewa. Nath said that all such private hospitals and social organizations which are working for organ donation in the interest of humanity will also be promoted. The Chief Minister said that every year about 1.8 lakh people in the country suffer from kidney disease but only 6 thousand people are able to get kidney. Similarly, every year two lakh people in the country die from liver disease or liver cancer. Of these, about 25,000 to 30,000 people can get new life if they get a liver transplant on time. He said that if people are made aware of the importance of organ donation it can help in saving lives.
