Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Cabinet here on Wednesday gave nod to an amendment in MP Municipalities Act 1961 ensuring from now on, the civic bodies’ heads would be elected through indirect poll. So far, the chairpersons of municipalities and Mayors in municipal corporations are directed by the public through direct polls.
After the cabinet decision, the civic bodies’ heads would not be elected by the public and instead the elected councillors and corporators would get the chance to elect the one who would head the civic body concerned.
While talking to media persons regarding the cabinet decisions, Public Relations Minister PC Sharma said the cabinet that met on Wednesday has cleared an amendment in the civic bodes’ act.
In another decision, the cabinet decided to complete the delimitation process for the civic bodies in coming two months against the set deadline of six months.
It was also decided that those who hide information on their criminal record during polls and get elected as corporators and councillors would be punished with Rs 25,000 fine and six months’ jail term, according to another amendment cleared by the cabinet.
Other proposals cleared by the cabinet include proposal to hike royalty fee of transportation of minerals, state government’s contribution for Indore-Manmad rail line, proposal for inviting tenders for rooftop solar panels in industrial areas and offering cost effective power to industries.
The Cabinet has also given sanction for fixed equity share capital for execution of Indore (Mhow) to Manmad new rail line project to connect Indore with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs. 8 thousand 931 crore. According to the total cost, the total equity of Rs. 408 crore 64 lakh i.e. 15 percent has to be given in 4 years as the capital share of Madhya Pradesh Government. In the first installment 2019-20, an amount of Rs 36.89 crore has been sanctioned. After the execution of the project, the distance from Indore to the port trust will come down by 150 km. The industrial activities of Pithampur, Khandwa and Burhanpur will get boost from the rail line.
